KTM has announced the 1090 Adventure R will come to the North American market in 2017. The 1050cc, 75-degree LC8 V-Twin-powered travel-enduro takes the place previously occupied by the 1190 Adventure R, creating a bit more space between it and the flagship of KTM’s big-bore, off-road line, the 1290 Super Adventure R.
The 1090 Adventure R’s tubeless 21-inch front and 18-inch spoke wheels shod in Continental TKC 80 Twinduro rubber and fully adjustable, inverted 48mm WP fork and WP shock with 8.6-inches travel give it legs perfectly suited for roughing it off the beaten path.
The tried-and-true chromium-molybdenum steel trellis frame and die-cast open lattice swingarm are designed to be lightweight and durable. The total weight of the machine, with its 6.1-gallon fuel tank full, is listed at 507 pounds. This puts the 1090 Adventure R squarely in line with its most recent Japanese competitor in the class.
The 1090 Adventure R’s electronics package is keenly focused on optimizing the off-road experience. The lean-sensitive Bosch two-channel 9M ABS system has an off-road setting which maintains ABS functionality on the front wheel and disengages it on the rear. The off-road traction control setting will not cut in when the tires start to slip and when in off-road mode and the ride-by-wire system calibrates throttle response and power output to be optimal in the dirt. ABS can be switched off entirely and the TC system has four modes, Sport, Street, Rain, Off-Road. TC can also be turned off if desired.
The PASC slipper clutch is hydraulically actuated and stopping duties are entrusted to dual 320mm discs and a set of radial-mount, four-piston Brembo calipers at the front and a Brembo two-piston caliper, single disc set-up out back.
Erognomics can be refined through two handlebar clamp positions, adjustable footpegs and an adjustable windshield. The seat makes use of KTM’s 3D foam padding for optimal comfort. The LCD display provides a wide variety of information from the essentials like speed and fuel level, along with a second LCD panel that has additional information ranging from outside temperature, onboard voltage, current fuel consumption and much more. Menus can be selected via a switch on the left side of the handlebar.
The 1090 Adventure R also comes with integrated pannier mounts, to make packing for the long haul that much easier.
