The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall notice for 22,433 Yamaha FJ-09, FZ-09 and XSR900 motorcycles.
According to the Safety Recall Report submitted March 31, 2017, “in affected motorcycles, the lower handlebar holder may have been painted improperly during manufacturing.” There also may not be enough thread locking agent applied, either. Paint can be damaged as a result or, worse, “the handlebar holder may come loose from the handle crown, causing loss of control that could result in a crash with injury or death.”
Affected models are in the 2015-2017 model year range, and it’s estimated that 100% of motorcycles within the parameters are effected by the defect.
Yamaha plans to notify owners of affected models, and dealers will replace the lower handlebar holder free of charge. Owners may contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926 for more information. The Yamaha recall ID number is 990114.
