The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall notice for a range of Suzuki GW250 motorcycles. According to the Safety Recall Report, “water can enter at the main wiring harness/rear brake light switch connectors and travel to the rear brake light switch along a wire” resulting in rear brake light switch corrosion. There are 1890 units affected by the defect. Here are the model year and production date ranges for all models included in the recall.
2013 GW250s manufactured January 15, 2013 to April 20, 2013.
2015 GW250s manufactured November 20, 2014 to May 22, 2015
2017 GW250s manufactured March 2, 2016 to March 8, 2016
Field reports related to the issue have been collected at various points since August 2012. The corrosion has affected brake light function and headlight function, since both share the same electrical circuit. In 2014 Suzuki added additional water protection to the wiring harness connector, but the issue persisted. After successfully observing the incident during testing in August 2016, Suzuki decided that previous updates were insufficient and decided to initiate the recall. By October 28, 2016, Suzuki had received 62 field reports related to the issue.
Suzuki dealers will install an updated brake light assembly and water protection cover free of charge. Owners of affected models can contact Suzuki customer service at 1-714-572-1490 for more information. Suzuki’s recall ID number is 2A66.
