Sumitomo Rubber USA, LLC has issued a recall for seven Dunlop Sportmax Q3+ tires, size 120/70ZR17 58W owing to the presence of air pockets in the shoulder of the tires.
According to the Defect Notice submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the affected tires “did not receive sufficient thermal energy during the curing process, due to a localized low temperature area on the curing bladder.”
Cure production started April 24, 2017 and inspections conducted as early as May 4 indicated that under curing had possibly occurred in some units. After subsequent inquiries, it was determined that 514 tires required recall. Of those, 90 were still internally located, 28 were confirmed to be scrap and 389 were found in the field. That left up to 7 tires still unaccounted for by the submission of the Defect Notice on May 24. As of the writing of this article, we’ve been informed that the remaining tires have been contained.
Dunlop plans to notify retailers and owners that may be affected by the recall and offer replacement tires, free of charge. Owners may contact Dunlop at 1-800-845-8378 for more information.
