Crowdfunding has given inventors and innovators, philanthropists and artists a 21st century way to bring their ideas to life. But because we’re obsessed with motorcycles around these parts, we’re particularly keen on the campaigns having to do with the machines we love. One of the latest to catch our eye has to do with improving a rider’s visibility. It’s called Brake Free and the Indiegogo campaign to raise $50,000 for final design engineering, tooling, testing and production just started today.
Brake Free is an LED brake light that attaches to the back of a rider’s helmet. It sits at eye level with other drivers and brightens when you hit the brakes or begin to slow. It responds to regular braking, engine braking or emergency braking, the latter circumstance triggering a special light pattern to ensure drivers behind notice the rapid deceleration.
A proprietary algorithm is implemented to differentiate normal head movements from braking/slowing. It’s wireless and uses accelerometer and gyroscope sensors to respond to deceleration and trigger the indication lights.
CEO and Co-Founder of Brake Free Technologies Alex Arkhangelskiy explains that Brake Free “is a much needed safety innovation that will help solve the visibility problem and save many lives. Brake Free is the first safety accessory to combine the latest sensor and LED technologies in a simple and beautiful product that riders will be proud to wear.”
“At Brake Free we are borrowing some of the advanced manufacturing techniques from companies like Audi and BMW”, explained Ian Dunn, industrial designer at Brake Free Technologies. “We’re delivering a safety product that is brighter and thinner than any other in an application like this.”
“What’s special about Brake Free is it can detect deceleration in the direction of travel” adds Johan Boot, technical co-founder at Brake Free Technologies. “Even when the head of the rider moves side to side or tips forward.”
