The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall notice for 2014-2015 BMW R nineT motorcycle owing to a a non-compliant rear turn signal lamp. There’s 1792 units included in the recall and the NHTSA reports that 100% of those vehicles, produced from November 27, 2013 through January 26, 2015, are affected.
In November 2014 BMW was in the midst of reviewing “cornering points” for the next gen R nineT when the issue was discovered. Further investigation found the R nineT out of compliance with Federal Motorcycle Vehicle Safety Standard 108 section 6.4.3, the portion of FMVSS that deals with lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment.
Ultimately, according to the NHTSA, “in certain road and traffic conditions, the rear turn signals may be slightly obscured to the driver of a following vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.”
BMW plans to notify owners and replace the rear turn signals with units that have longer arms, free of charge. BMW customer service can be reached at 1-800-525-7417 fore more information.
